A Balance-Time to get back on the wagon... Running Blog at FastRunningBlog.Com http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/ Wed, 19 Nov 2008 06:42:35 +0100 FeedCreator 1.7.2 Sun, Nov 09, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-11-09-2008.html Just focusing on sleep. Had a few loose ends to tie up and then in the afternoon was off to the airport. I'm actually now in New Orleans. Everyone on the homefront and myself included seem to be getting back to normal. No running while I'm here. I didn't want to push my luck so I left my running stuff at home. This is the first time I've ever done that. Really stinks as this meeting has 40,000 attendees and has a 5K race on Tues morning but I didn't want to tempt myself as I know I have no self control. Right now get healthy and when I'm back to my "normal" routine next Monday I'll give it another go... So I may not bothering updating until then. But then again why not at least it allows me to think about running for a few minutes each day even if I'm not doing it. Hey at this point I'll take what I can get... Sun, 09 Nov 2008 05:00:00 +0100 Sat, Nov 08, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-11-08-2008.html Sometimes good things happen for bad reasons. Since Sandra was now feeling under the weather I got to spend the day with Kaitlyn. We spent the morning running errands. However, Sandra got worse and due to being 35-wks pregnant we had to take her in for tests. So we spent three hours of the afternoon at the hospital. Good news is she and the baby are fine. Better news is that Kaitlyn took her nap in my lap while waiting for the tests. Bad news, well the obvious we are all sick now... Sat, 08 Nov 2008 05:00:00 +0100 Fri, Nov 07, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-11-07-2008.html Well I thought I was feeling better. Had a busy morning then went to a post-doc retreat. However, an hour in I was feeling horrible again and left early. Took a two hour nap and then lounged around. Sandra has now been having some of my same symptoms... Fri, 07 Nov 2008 05:00:00 +0100 Thu, Nov 06, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-11-06-2008.html Well I spoke too soon. At about 2am in the morning I woke up getting sick. Then about every hour thereafter. At 6am when I was supposed to have already been in to work I started thinking about not going in. This would be my first sick day in a decade. By 8:30am Sandra told me to go back to sleep and she took Kaitlyn to school. I didn't wake up again until about 12:30pm. I went into work because he had a visiting speaker coming this afternoon but by about 3:30pm I was done and just packed up and went back home without going to the talk... I sure hope this passes quickly. It isn't even funny how weak my body has been the last few weeks, between not running, throwing out my back, a cold, and now a stomach flu I'm convinced I'm falling apart... Let's see what tomorrow brings. Thu, 06 Nov 2008 05:00:00 +0100 Wed, Nov 05, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-11-05-2008.html Today was just a good day. My aches and pains didn't seem too bad and work went by like a breeze. I even managed to get twice as much done this morning as I had predicted so I don't have to go in early tomorrow. Between the weather and not wanting to push my luck I just did two easy miles on the treadmill. Wed, 05 Nov 2008 05:00:00 +0100 Tue, Nov 04, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-11-04-2008.html
Miles are miles and I will take them. With the car situation I ran into work today. Door to door it is 2.5 miles. Luckily I missed the rain but I was super over dressed. I took some Aleve for my back so I can't feel my knee but the knot in my back is still there. Well I have a meeting with my boss in an hour and then another full day. One of these days I'll get to type about running again instead of this complaining about "life" stuff...

Asics DS-Trainer #2: 371 / / Asics DS-Trainer #3: 155 / / Saucony Rides #1: 445 / / Saucony Rides #2: 448 // Saucony Rides #3: 303 // Adidas Adistar (flats): 205 / / Adidas Adistar-2 (flats): 4 / /

Tue, 04 Nov 2008 05:00:00 +0100 Mon, Nov 03, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-11-03-2008.html Even working until 11pm last night I didn't get done everything I needed so into work before 6am again. After a long day with a sore back and then an even longer work night (done at 11:30pm) I finally finished one of the three things I had on my to do list and called it a night. With the weather turning south Sandra will need the car more so before I went to sleep I dropped off a change of clothes and my work stuff in lab. No run, wanted to give my back another day rest and knee about the same. Good news is today is the first day I didn't have to take Dayquil, so at least the cold seems like it is gone. Mon, 03 Nov 2008 05:00:00 +0100 Sun, Nov 02, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-11-02-2008.html Well what can I say when it rains it pours. I ended up having to work most the day. In the AM I had house chores to take care of. Moving around some more furniture and trying to back away more stuff to finalize the prep for "Little Sister". I was trying to move the treadmill and threw out my back. It has wheels on the front but for whatever reason my back just locked up anyway, boy I am an old man now... In the PM I did get to spend a little family time but had to work most of the afternoon and evening. Oh well, I guess that is life sometimes. Remember to be thankful for what you have. In this economic climate I have to remember at least I have a job, it may be too much but it is work... With all of that going on, the lingering cold, and an ache in my knee from yesterday's run today was a day of "rest"... Kaitlyn and I then went for a run to the park. We stopped to feed the geese and watch a guy fly his model airplane and helicopter. The weather was perfect today. I'm now in lab as I have a mock up of my next meeting on Monday and have to have my poster prepared (including a new set of data that I didn't even get until last night). So I'll have a work filled weekend. The run overall went fine. In to work early this morning so that I could leave early. Left at about 3:30pm so that we could go Trick-or-Treating at Foothill Village. It is nice that the shops to that for the community. It makes life a lot easier. It was packed but still fun. After that we went to dinner and then hit a couple more houses. After bedtime I did a few easy miles on the treadmill. I got some done but just have too much on my to do list for the next two weeks. The great news is that I was able to get in a run after the bedtime routine. Just an easy three again but this is the best I've felt running two days in a row for about two months. Tomorrow I meet with an orthotics specialists. He is supposed to look at my orthotics that I've had for about 7 years. Robin's advice was that maybe by tweaking it a little and keeping up with a good stretch routine I can get back to some "real" training...

Asics DS-Trainer #2: 371 / / Asics DS-Trainer #3: 155 / / Saucony Rides #1: 445 / / Saucony Rides #2: 448 // Saucony Rides #3: 290 // Adidas Adistar (flats): 205 / / Adidas Adistar-2 (flats): 4 / /
Tue, 28 Oct 2008 05:00:00 +0100 Mon, Oct 27, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-10-27-2008.html
Planning on some running tonight. Yesterday both my wife and daughter woke up with colds, again! I'm coughing a little but nothing like the two of them. Kaitlyn attended three Halloween parties last week so take your pick of were they picked it up from. So I didn't sleep well between them coughing and me worrying about them. Knee was a little more achy today than yesterday but two days post run and with the hiking... Also, I have to stay focused on rest to heal and that wasn't happening last night. We did watch some movies this weekend and that was something but otherwise finishing house set-up (of which I think I'm done) and lab work. I have my next meeting in two weeks and I have to have the poster prepped a week from today, not a problem BUT I'm still waiting on data from one of my co-workers and he was supposed to have it to me by last Monday and I still haven't seen it... Oh well worse comes to worse I present the same poster as the last meeting :)...

Just keep it ... Mon, 27 Oct 2008 05:00:00 +0100 Sun, Oct 26, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-10-26-2008.html Rest day. Yesterday's run went ok and so far I have lasting additional pain. I'm keeping up with the stretching. Today after a morning of usual routine I took Kaitlyn for a hike at the top of Millcreek after her nap. We went for an hour hike but didn't make one mile. It was great though. She liked all the leaves on the ground and running with me for a portion of the hike. Sun, 26 Oct 2008 04:00:00 +0100 Sat, Oct 25, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-10-25-2008.html
As promised back to it. My knee was especially sore this morning after all the twisting and poking yesterday but it didn't get worse during the run. I ran out and back to the waterfall near my house with Kaitlyn. She could tell the reduced pace from the time off and kept saying faster daddy faster... Overall not bad but there is room for improvement. We'll see how I feel later today and tomorrow. In work now for a couple hours then to errands and a local Halloween party.

Asics DS-Trainer #2: 371 / / Asics DS-Trainer #3: 155 / / Saucony Rides #1: 445 / / Saucony Rides #2: 448 // Saucony Rides #3: 284 // Adidas Adistar (flats): 205 / / Adidas Adistar-2 (flats): 4 / /

Sat, 25 Oct 2008 04:00:00 +0100 Fri, Oct 24, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-10-24-2008.html I said it was time to get back on the wagon and the PT agrees. It turns out that the PT I saw Robin Marcus is a member of the Black Sheep and knows Chad, Josh, and company. Sometimes I'm so horrible with names, I've probably even met her but she didn't remember me either so maybe we didn't overlap for a workout. So I now have both an Ortho and a PT telling me that there is no obvious tear. That is good news. The bad news is we are not 100% sure. However, Robin was VERY thorough and came up with a bunch of suggestions and things for me to try as well as referred me to a third party to get one more thing checked out. So it is time to stop moping around and get back to running. I'm to try a few miles each day and as long as the pain doesn't get worse go with it. Also, I have some familiar stretches that I've neglected that I HAVE TO GET BACK TO... Finally, the "third party" is going to see if he can fix my orthotics. As they are over 8 yrs old it is probably about time. So the news is better ... Fri, 24 Oct 2008 04:00:00 +0100 Thu, Oct 23, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-10-23-2008.html Very hectic day. Working too much. The good news is that the house is almost completely ready for "little sister". Thu, 23 Oct 2008 04:00:00 +0100 Wed, Oct 22, 2008 http://ARW.fastrunningblog.com/blog-10-22-2008.html Knee much better than yesterday. It helps not hitting it against furniture. Just keeping focused on my year end deadlines trying to get two projects wrapped up. Most likely stress. As the year nears an end I reevaluate where I am on my career development and I'm still a good stop away from an independent move. Not a big problem as I'm only half way through this stage in my career but for whatever reason it is sitting heavy on me. Most likely due to the continued inability to run pain free, an addition to the household, and general obsessive personality. I did contact a PT last night in hopes to get evaluated this week.
